Bindlestiff Family Cirkus

Venue: Laurelton, QN141st Rd btw 225th and 226th StGPS
14125 224th St, Queens, NY 11413

Bindlestiff Family Variety Arts, Inc., founded by Keith Nelson and Stephanie Monseu in 1995, prides itself on being an integral part of America’s outstanding folk traditions of circus, sideshow, and vaudeville. Bindlestiff’s activities fall into three main areas. First, we produce original shows, festivals, and public events. Over the decades, Bindlestiff has presented nearly 600 of the world’s top artists in the circus and variety fields. Shows in our home regions of NYC and the Hudson Valley, as well as national touring in the United States, have engaged audiences in the hundreds of thousands, with performances in theaters, Spiegeltents, big tops, cruise ships, fairs and festivals, including 2017’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival, celebrating the cultural heritage of the American circus on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The second area of Bindlestiff’s work is support of emerging and professional variety artists. The Bindlestiff Open Stage Variety Show is the premiere circus “open mic” night of New York City, presenting acts by over 100 artists every year. Bindlestiff’s yearly First of May Award and Residency offers emerging NYC-based artists financial support and mentorship from Bindlestiff. Twice a year, Bindlestiff’s Cavalcade of Youth, produced in collaboration with Playful Productions, pairs young artists from diverse backgrounds interested in learning the craft and skills of circus and variety with professional mentors in the field, presenting public shows in New York City.

And third, Bindlestiff provides high-quality circus arts education and enrichment opportunities. Free Out-of-School-Time and Elder programs serve people in the Hudson Valley and New York City by using circus arts training as a medium for social justice, community building, and youth development. Circus skill workshops are also offered with touring productions. Bindlestiff yearly develops and expand its educational programs with new partnerships, greater outreach, and continued professional development for instructors.

Venue: 41-26 27th Street, Long Island City, NY 1110

We’re bringing the popular Japanese culture of maid cafés straight to New York! RESOBOX is re-decorating to hold a special one-week pop-up maid café to celebrate the cute culture developed in Akihabara. Maid cafés are a subcategory of cosplay (costume play) restaurants found in Japan and consist of waitresses dressed in maid costumes to serve customers as if they were their own personal maids.

The pop-up event will begin Monday, August 22 (The pre-opening event will be held on August 21, 8PM – 10PM but is reserved for media guests only) and will last until Sunday, August 28. Stop by for a sneak peek into Japan’s unique culture!

RESOBOX is the name created from a mashup of the words Resonate and Box.
This Resonating Box envisions a space where people can meet and collaborate to create new and innovative
Japanese culture. The space within this Box Resonates, too, shaking up everything inside.
Japanese people are welcome, and so are the many non-Japanese people who understand and find themselves being influenced by the arts of Japan.
These artists can meet in RESOBOX, and create new works by adding and mixing in their sensibilities, playing a great role in preserving, and even developing Japanese culture.
In today’s global environment, Japanese culture might not always emanate from Japan alone, but also from places like New York City, where culture is highly concentrated and widely disseminated to the world at large.
The founders of RESOBOX believe that by promoting such artists, truly innovative and more sophisticated Japanese culture can evolve, resonating with people all over the world.

Kyoto Ninnaji Temple

Venue: 33 Omurosuchi, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8092

Ninnaji is one of Kyoto’s great temples that are listed as World Heritage Sites. It is the head temple of the Omuro School of the Shingon sect of Buddhism and was founded in 888 by the reigning emperor. Over many centuries, a member of the Imperial Family used to serve as head priest, and the temple was also known as Omuro Imperial Palace.

Due to the many wars and fires that ravaged Kyoto throughout its history, none of the buildings from the temple’s foundation in the 9th century still survive. The oldest buildings date back to the beginning of the Edo Period in the early 1600s, including the main hall (Kondo), the Kannon Hall, the Niomon front gate, the Chumon inner gate and the five storied pagoda.

The highlight of visit to Ninnaji is the Goten, the former residence of the head priest in the southwestern corner of the temple complex, Built in the style of an imperial palace, the graceful buildings are connected with each other by covered corridors, feature elegantly painted sliding doors (fusuma) and are surrounded by beautiful rock and pond gardens.

Ninnaji is also famous for a grove of locally cultivated, late blooming cherry trees called Omuro Cherries. Because the trees are late blooming, Ninnaji is a good place to visit towards the end of Kyoto’s cherry blossom season, which is usually around mid April.

Japanese New Year Celebration in
Washington

Venue: 2660 Woodley Rd NW, Washington, DC 20008
Co-host: Washington Japanese American Chamber of
Commerce Foundation
Washington Japanese American Chamber of Commerce
Embassy of Japan in the United States

I received an offer from my acquaintance Reiko Hirai to participate as a guest performer in the Japanese New Year Celebration in Washington on January 28, 2018. I showcased a 30-minute performance of traditional Japanese art,
“Wazuma”, at the festival. The enthusiasm of approximately 2,000 attendees was incredible, and the event ended in great success.

On Sunday, January 28, the 2018 New Year Festival was held at the Marriott Wardman Hotel in Washington D.C. This year, the event was co-hosted by the Washington Japanese American Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Washington Japanese American Chamber of Commerce, and the Embassy of Japan in the United States. Thanks to proactive promotion efforts, despite the unfortunate all-day rain and reduced public transportation, we welcomed approximately 2,000 attendees, nearly the same number as last year.

Guests began arriving around 10:30, and by 11:00, there was a long line at the registration desk before the venue opened.
Prior to the opening, Shinto priestess Kuniko Kanwa offered prayers for the festival’s success and for the health and prosperity of the attendees in the coming year. After the opening at 11:00, the atmosphere was heightened by a traditional taiko drum performance. Attendees spread out to their desired corners of the venue.

Following the opening remarks from Ambassador Sasae, who is set to return to Japan this year, and President Ikeda of the Washington Japanese American Chamber of Commerce, both countries’ national anthems were sung. The program continued with the traditional lion dance, a children’s chorus, a karuta demonstration, a taiko performance, a magic show by Sho Kitta, a kendama competition involving attendees, and a performance by volunteers from the embassy, along with a Ryukyu drum demonstration. The event concluded with a performance by the JBE Band, comprised of embassy and chamber of commerce volunteers. The stage remained lively until the end of the festival.
There were long lines throughout the day at the game corner, toy and candy sales area, mochi pounding corner, and Japanese food sales area, allowing attendees to experience Japanese culture in a short time. Thanks to about four months of preparation by the organizing committee and the support of over 280 volunteers on the day of the event, we successfully concluded the New Year Festival. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all those involved, as well as to our sponsoring companies and individuals.
